Alban Wagener is an architecture studio based in Porto, Portugal and Luxembourg. Bio Alban Wagener, born in Luxembourg 1985, finished his architecture studies at the Technische Universität Wien in 2015. He graduated with distinction under the guidance of Univ. Prof. Arch. DI András Pálffy. During his studies he collaborated with the following architectural studios KSP Jürgen Engel (DE) and Valentiny Architectes (LU). Before opening his own practice, he was working with David Chipperfield Architects in London. In 2024 Alban Wagener was invited to be Jury in an international competition for the Banaue Lodge in the Philippines. August 2025, &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; The studio has developed an AI-enhanced design workflow to support architects and practices in accelerating design development, visualization, and decision-making without compromising architectural intent. &nbsp; &nbsp; By combining advanced 3D visualization, photogrammetry-based material capture, and AI-assisted generative tools, the workflow replaces time-consuming physical models and repetitive manual iterations with a flexible, fully digital process. This enables the rapid generation and comparison of design variants, material systems, and spatial strategies at a high level of realism. &nbsp; &nbsp; The workflow integrates seamlessly into established architectural processes, supporting early-stage concept testing, design development, and client communication. October 2024, &nbsp; Our proposal for the refurbishment and extension of the listed Leão de Arroios primary school aims to make a positive contribution to the local community by enhancing the performance and restoring the architectural identity of a singular post-modern building. &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; The new buildings follow the profile of Avenida Torrado da Silva, accompanying it in its gradual ascent, in a longitudinal volumetry, which opens onto the surroundings: with large balconies, in a careful design of fine and elegant lines that project from the recessed façade cloth, dematerialising its presence in the visual impact of the City. The aim is to ensure the cohesion of the built ensemble, both in terms of volume and materiality: the pigmented concrete base is superimposed on the pigmented concrete base, a commercial floor is superimposed and, to this, the dwellings marked by the exposed structure the full-length balconies, which lend a clear horizontality to the building complex. The longitudinal profile is defragmented by rhythmic advances and recessings in its altimetry, breaking the visual perception of the total length of the implantation. &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; Designing a staircase for the museum of the deported, serving as both a vertical connection and a focal point for visitors, posed a complex yet compelling challenge. Situated in the Piazza dei Martiri, the ground floor hosts the ticket office and tourist information center, allowing direct access to the courtyard's staircase upon ticket purchase. Accessible to all, the space-efficient courtyard design adheres to legal requirements, minimizing the footprint within the densely built area. Compliant with fire safety regulations, the structure aligns with the BBPR-designed monument's orthogonal layout, seamlessly blending into the historical site through reflective materials. With an ecological focus, the landscape design prioritizes water-efficient plants and incorporates relaxation spaces with benches and strategically placed trees, all on a gravel surface promoting soil permeability. The facade utilizes recyclable aluminum panels attached to a concrete core, facilitating a disassemblable and reusable structure, in line with the 'DfD' design for disassembly principle. Emphasizing sustainability, the intervention incorporates manual surface treatments instead of additional finishes, prioritizes energy-efficient LED lighting with presence sensors, and integrates a solar-powered rainwater recovery system for irrigation. The striking staircase design preserves the original appearance of the Torrione degli Spagnoli while incorporating terraces to attract visitors and offer new perspectives of the museum and its surroundings, ensuring the project's economic viability over time. &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; The proposal sought to present the construction of two new buildings for the affordable housing market in Porto. In this sense, we propose building the structures parallel to the facing Lordelo neighbourhood, optimising the solar orientation and respecting the visual framework of the urban complex. The aim was to provide all houses with a private outdoor area, addressing an architectural design need that became more evident during the lockdown caused by the Covid-19 virus. During this period, the feeling of seclusion emphasised the need to include outdoor spaces in architectural projects; although this is a pre-existing need, it must be rethought, allowing the exploration of new solutions that ensure more comfort. Thus, the incorporation of continuous balconies is a basic principle in the elaboration of this project, related to the architectural quality that this design provides, by allowing and encouraging the contemplation of the surrounding landscape and the integration of nature in the building. The exterior cladding of the buildings will be made of brick, ensuring visual harmony with the surrounding buildings, with high benefits in terms of maintenance and durability. The proposal incorporates sustainability principles, such as the collection and use of rainwater, the inclusion of a community laundry, the use of solar energy and the optimisation of energy consumption.
